Spellman missed on the sports page

It may surprise you that a woman is among your daily readers of the sports section of the Daily Herald, and I must tell you although I truly enjoy reading the opinions and reactions of your writers, I deeply miss Mike Spellman. He was a one-of-a-kind.

I loved the wit and warmth he infused in his columns. Every day, it was his column that I turned to first.

His overall knowledge of sports was amazing. How could one young man know so much about multiple sports?

I read almost the entire sports section. Now, there is such a missing piece in my routine. No Mike. I still can't get used to it.

I wanted to go to Mike's wake even though I really do not like going to wakes. I wanted to tell him good-bye, and what a part of my mornings he'd been. How much that I had learned from him. Laughed at his wit. Enjoyed him with my coffee,

I wanted to tell his family these things, too, but I didn't go. After all, I am but a stranger to them. So I am writing this now.

Thanks, Mike. You will forever be missed.
