Elgin's Perryman sisters off to flying start for UMSL softball

Elgin High product Hannah Perryman achieved significant milestones recently for the University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team.

Perryman threw the second perfect game of her career and fifth no-hitter in UMSL's 8-0 five-inning victory over Lake Superior State in the opener of a doubleheader.

Perryman struck out all 15 batters she faced en route to the perfect game.

In earlier action, Perryman became the program's all-time wins leader after notching her 59th career victory in UMSL's 10-2 six-inning win over Saginaw Valley at the D2 Midwest region Dome Invitational in Rosemont (hosted by Lewis University). Perryman struck out 15 in that game.

On the season, Perryman is 7-1 with a 2.32 ERA in 13 appearances (10 starts). She has 4 complete games, 2 shutouts and 2 saves. In 48⅓ innings, Perryman has struck out 85 and walked only 10. Opponents are hitting .214 against her.

In the doubleheader sweep of Lake Superior State Perryman's younger sister, Jennah, belted 2 home runs (both in Game 2) and finished with 5 RBI. Jennah Perryman also had 2 hits and 3 RBI in the victory over Saginaw Valley.

Jennah Perryman has started all 16 games this season and is hitting .295 with 13 hits (including 4 homers) and 12 RBI.

Nationally ranked UMSL is off to a 15-1 start.

Allen at Stevens Point: South Elgin graduate Paige Allen has made an immediate impact at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Allen, a freshman outfielder on the softball team, recently was named a UW-Stevens Point athlete of the week.

Allen earned the award after hitting .333, which included her first collegiate home run, in a four-game stretch in Rochester, Minn. (Stevens point went 2-2). Allen hit a 3-run homer in an 8-0 win over Dubuque and also had 2 hits earlier in the day in a loss to Carleton. During the 4 games, Allen was 4-for-12 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.

Ranallo at Benedictine: St. Edward alum Vincenza Ranallo recently was named to the all-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference first team.

Ranallo was averaging 13.0 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury in late January. The senior reached double digits in 12 games, including six in a row prior to the injury. Three times during the season Ranallo scored more than 20 points. She had a double-double against Marian on Jan. 3 and scored a season-high 28 points in a game against Monmouth in November.

Ranallo's sister, Rena, played in 5 games this season for Benedictine and averaged 2.4 points per game.

Benedictine finished 18-10 overall and 16-4 in conference play. The team recently reached the conference tournament championship game where it lost to Wisconsin Lutheran.

Romano at Miami (Ohio): Dundee-Crown graduate Jake Romano is a junior outfielder on the Miami (Ohio) baseball team. Through last week, Romano had played in 9 games and had 5 hits and 4 runs scored. One of his hits was a triple. He also had 3 walks and 2 stolen bases and made 14 putouts and 1 assist without an error in the outfield. Miami was off to a 2-9 start.

Williams at Barry: Elgin graduate Arie Williams is part of a Barry University team that will play in the NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament Saturday.

Williams, a sophomore guard, has played in 29 games this season and is averaging 17.2 minutes of playing time. He's shooting .408 from the field and has connected on 65 of 155 three-point attempts (. 419). He's also shooting .793 from the free-throw line.

Williams is averaging 8.1 points per game and has 60 assists and 23 steals. He's one of six players on the Barry team averaging 8 or more points per contest.

Barry, which made it to the conference tournament championship game, where it lost to national No. 1 Florida Southern, brings a 24-5 overall record into Saturday's first-round contest against Union at Florida Southern. Barry is the No. 2 seed. Union is a No. 7 seed. Barry set a school record this season for most wins. Barry did defeat Florida Southern earlier this season.

Truman State women's basketball: A pair of local products made contributions on the Truman State women's basketball team this season.

Streamwood graduate Michelle Tomczak is a redshirt junior center who finished third on the team in scoring this season at 10.6 points per game. In 27 games Tomczak shot .483 from the field and .602 from the free-throw line. She also led Truman State in rebounding at 6.6 per game and added 39 blocks to go with 14 steals.

Huntley graduate Sam Andrews is a 5-11 freshman forward for Truman State. Andrews played in 24 games this season and hit 11 3-pointers (. 344 from the 3-point line) and shot 30-for-32 from the foul line (. 938). She finished her inaugural college season averaging 3.3 points per game.

In recent action, Tomczak had 6 points and 5 rebounds in Truman State's 72-51 loss to Indianapolis in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Andrews hit a 3-pointer in the game.

In a 63-51 loss to Quincy, Tomczak had 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Andrews had 7 points (one 3-pointer).

In a 58-53 victory over Missouri-St. Louis, Tomczak had 10 points and 5 rebounds. In a 78-72 overtime win against Maryville, Tomczak had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, while Andrews scored 9 points in 7 minutes. She made a 3-pointer and shot 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Truman State finished the year with a 16-11 record.

Smith at Loyola: South Elgin graduate Becca Smith is in her junior season on the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team. Through late week, Smith was averaging 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for the Ramblers (5-24 overall). In 29 games (22 starts), Smith had 21 3-pointers, was shooting .727 from the free-throw line and was averaging 3.7 rebounds to go with 75 assists and 44 steals.
