Woman hit by car in Arlington Heights in 'extremely severe' condition

A woman struck by a car Monday while walking her dog near Pioneer Park in Arlington Heights remained hospitalized Tuesday, and a social media posting from her son describes her condition as “extremely severe.”

The 58-year-old woman was hit shortly before 6:55 a.m. Monday at Grove Street and Kaspar Avenue, Arlington Heights police Capt. Andrew Whowell said.

Whowell said the woman was in critical condition Tuesday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Her son offered more details of her condition on her Facebook page.

“She is receiving very good hospital care, but the damage to her brain is extremely severe. My mother's brain function is gone, and the woman we knew is dead,” he wrote, while thanking friends and family for their support. “My mother was an amazing woman, and will always be in our hearts.”

The Daily Herald is aware of the woman's name, but is honoring the family's request, made through the Arlington Heights police, not to publish it yet.

Whowell said the police department is conducting a speed analysis, and getting search warrants for the 16-year-old driver's phone records. Whowell said both those checks are routine procedure in an accident, and he expects the investigation to be completed later this week.

The driver has not been charged or cited, police said.

The posting from the victim's son called it “a terrible accident.”

Police said the dog the woman was walking was not harmed.
