Construction of Goose Pond visitor center expected this year

LINTON, Ind. (AP) - Construction of a visitor center at a popular southwestern Indiana bird-watching spot is set to begin later this year nearly three years after its original groundbreaking ceremony.

A model of the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area's new visitor center was displayed at a Friday banquet in Linton attended by state Department of Natural Resources officials and members of Friends of Goose Pond.

DNR deputy director John Davis told the gathering the Legislature has approved funding and work on the center should begin by September.

The Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1EBu0qz ) Davis says $2.6 million has been allocated for the project at the 8,000-acre, wetlands-filled wildlife area.

Then-Gov. Mitch Daniels attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the center in September 2012, at which time state officials expected construction to begin in spring 2013.
