Southeastern Container to close Effingham bottle factory

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) - Owners of a plastic soft drink bottle plant in Effingham say they plan to close the factory later this year or early next year.

The Effingham Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1M5oNba ) that Southeastern Container said in a Tuesday news release that other factories will provide bottles and demand for bottle produced in Effingham will decline.

About 50 people work at the plant. The company said it will try to place as many of those workers as possible in other Southeastern Container jobs. The Effingham plant opened in 1995. Southeastern Container is based in Enka, North Carolina.

Effingham City Administrator Jim Arndt says the city will be "reaching out" to the company to recoup about $100,000 in tax incentives. The city gave the incentives to the company to keep the plant open.
