Mundelein District 75 offers enrichment courses to expand learning

In Mundelein School District 75, students head to school on Saturdays with a skip in their step. They excitedly enter the school, head to their classroom, and get right to work.

About 160 students in kindergarten through eighth grade take part in District 75's Saturday Scholars program, a six-week course that provides students with enrichment courses to expand their classroom learning, said Anthony Cho, district project challenge coordinator.

"These classes expose students to a variety of learning experiences and opportunities to advance unique learning skills. This year, classes were focused on 21st century learning skills of creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and problem solving. Classes are also focused on engagement and hands-on learning," Cho said.

Over the years, courses that have been offered include learning a foreign language, chess, volleyball, young scientists, K'Nex construction building, candy making, scrapbooking, baby-sitting, yoga, movie making, and games/puzzles courses.

The courses are geared to support teachers with Illinois Learning Standards and the 21st century learning skills of today.
