What changes, if any, do you think need to be made? The primary goal of our school district is to prepare our children to be successful in their subsequent education and their endeavors beyond school. By achieving this, our children will have a secure future. Our schools currently do a good job in accomplishing this goal. We do need to strive for continuous improvement and adaptation of the curriculum so that it meets the needs of students and teachers as we move into the future. The best way to react to change is at the local level. I'd suggest empowering the teachers to have a level of flexibility to adapt the curriculum while staying within the basic frame work.Rate District 15's financial position. Forecasts show the district won't see a surplus until 2016-2017. Do you agree with using reserves to pay for budget deficits? The school district should always operate within its means. If an extraordinary situation arises then board has a responsibility to the parents and taxpayers to fully explain the situation and their plan to handle it in the most cost effective manner. If debt can be eliminated then it should be as long as the proper amount of reserve cash is maintained.Architects identified nearly $156 million in capital projects needed at District 15 schools in the recent state-mandated audit. The board allocated $4.6 million this year, more than the usual $3 million a year. Do you agree with this approach or want something different? The safety of our children and school staff is mandatory. All safety issues should be addressed in an expedient manner. While these capital improvement decisions are being made we must always remain good stewards of the resources which have been entrusted to us by the community. This means prioritizing the projects within the overall audit and having proposals analyzed by third parties if necessary. The proposed formation of an Infrastructure Planning Committee to advise the board on this is an important part of evaluating the needs. Are all the elementary schools in District 15 treated equally, in your opinion? Explain why or why not, or where you think discrepancies lie.I think that all the elementary schools in the district should be treated equally. Boundaries for each school may need to be reviewed. We must ensure that the students of District 15 are equally distributed among the schools so as not to overburden any one school. This will keep class sizes consistent among the schools. In addition, students should be assigned to schools as close possible to where they live as this will help reduce transportation time to and from school. Are you currently employed by or retired from a school district, if so, which one? Is any member of your direct family - spouse, child or child-in-law - employed by the school district where you are seeking a school board seat?I'm neither currently employed nor retired from a school district. I do not have a spouse or child employed by the school district. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I would like to see more parents and community members engaged in the activities of D15. A great way to do this is by attending board meetings to stay informed. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Pope Francis is inspirational leader. I admire his dedication to bettering the lives of others who need help the most. What's the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?Always strive to do what is right and not what is easy.If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?Though I've made mistakes in my life I feel that I don't have any regrets in my life that would warrant a do-over.What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?My favorite subject was science. My science classes gave me exposure to the many fields of science which lead me to a carrer in engineering. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Treat others how you would like to be treated. This will make you a happy person with solid relationships.
