Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?The issue that motivated me to run for library trustee is the need to maintain the relevancy and viability of the public library through increasing involvement of our community. My parents and grandparents both moved to Elk Grove in 1957 and I was born here in 1958. I've spent most of life in this village and use the library extensively. My husband and I have been "Friends of the Library" for several years. I have over 20 years of public service experience. There are huge challenges facing public service organizations such as a library today and as a trustee, I would like to be entrusted by the residents of Elk Grove to lead in the reinvention and redefinition of what our public library can and should be for all residents. If you are an incumbent, describe your main contributions. Tell us of important initiatives you've led. If you are a non-incumbent, tell us what contributions you would make. What I can contribute as a trustee is a visionary, high-energy leadership style with a service orientation, a talent for developing strong professional relationships, and outstanding analytic and problem-solving abilities. My focus with non-profits has been on assisting leaders in developing successful strategies in building and managing successful public service organizations and helping to sustain financially sound and operationally viable organizations. I see the economic and technological challenges for libraries today as an exciting opportunity to be creative and grow as a community library. One thing I think we should count on is that technology always changes- we donâ#128;™t know what the future of the economic environment and technological evolution will bring-so we need to decide what kind of organization can meet any challenge. We have to begin the discussion on how the library can remain viable, relevant and fluid in order to meet any changes that may present themselves in the future. This starts with a clear, compelling vision.Do you have a library card? How long have you had it? How often do you use it?My Elk Grove library card is as old as the library (and I mean the original library based out of a house on Forest Lane). The most exciting thing is I can check out the book I co-authored from the EG library. I use the library several times a week and attend many of the programs and trips. In fact, the picture in this letter was taken at a recent library outing. I average $500.00 in donations every year to the Friends of the Library book sale.Space is an issue at many libraries. If that's the case at your library, would your solution be to expand the physical plant or make room by doing away with parts of the collection that technology has made less critical? Explain.I don't believe this needs to be an either/or issue. The structure should be driven by the vision of the residents and staff of Elk Grove for what they want their library to be now and in the future. First comes the vision, then the structure(s).What impact have economic and technological changes had on libraries? How does a library remain relevant? How should its role in the community change?I see the economic and technological challenges as an exciting opportunity to be creative and grow as a community library.
