Teen charged in fatal East St. Louis shooting

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - An 18-year-old southern Illinois man has been charged with first-degree murder in an East St. Louis shooting.

The Belleville News-Democrat (bit.ly/1LMYc4p ) reports that Darren McCloud of Shiloh was arrested Tuesday and charged with killing 19-year-old Fredrick Purnell.

McCloud is accused of walking up to a car in which Purnell was a passenger and shooting several rounds inside. Authorities say a 16-year-old passenger who was shot in the back remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Police say another 16-year-old had just picked Purnell up in Belleville. Both the driver and his 11-year-old sister, who also was in the car, were unharmed.

McCloud remained in the St. Clair County Jail Thursday on a $1 million bond. It wasn't clear if he has hired an attorney who can comment on his case.
