Huntley schools welcome Sun City volunteers

Huntley Unit District 158 invites members of the Sun City community to volunteer at any of several upcoming opportunities:

• Young Authors Judging on Thursday, March 12, at Chesak Elementary on the Reed Road campus for all kindergarten to fifth-grade judging, and Heineman Middle School on the Square Barn Road campus for middle school judging. Young Authors is an optional literacy program for students. Judges will read the students' books and, following a detailed rubric provided, will work with a team. Volunteers will determine the winning selection (per building). Parents may not participate.

• Kindergarten registration will be held Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30, at the District 158 Administrative Building on the Square Barn Road campus. Shifts available are: noon to 2 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist the registration department with a variety of tasks as parents bring their incoming kindergarten children in to register for the 2015-16 school year.

• Battle of the Books on Friday, May 1, for fifth grade and Friday, May 22 for fourth grade, from 8:15 a.m. to noon at Conley Elementary School, on Square Barn Road campus. American Battle of the Books is a national reading incentive program. It is a fun, academic-based competition with the purpose of encouraging students to read quality literature and have fun when working with peers toward a common goal (The Battle). Students read from a selection of 30 books and are paired in teams by their teachers. Volunteers will serve as facilitators by asking prepared questions during the Battle, which consists of various "gamelike" sessions that the students rotate through. This event proves exciting every year, and is one that community volunteers always look forward to. Parents may not participate in the facilitator capacity.

• Join in Reading Programs from late March through April at Hannah Martin Elementary on the Reed Road campus. The school will host a five-week reading enrichment program. Volunteers will come once a week for one hour to work with several small groups of students during that hour. No teaching experience is needed, just a love of literacy and desire to see children succeed.

To volunteer for one of these events, contact Eileen Delahanty, volunteer coordinator for District 158, at (847) 659-6152 or edelahanty@district158.org.
