New Decatur program leads to big increase in recycling
DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - The city of Decatur says a new recycling program that doesn't require residents to sort materials by type has been a success.
Before the new program began in 2011, residents who wanted to recycle had to group items according to type in bins. Only 12 percent of residents regularly took part.
Now, all materials can be mixed together in a process known as single-stream recycling.
The Herald & Review reports (http://bit.ly/19ErfJF ) that city data now shows that 57 percent of households are taking part.
Assistant City Manager Billy Tyus says the goal was 30 percent by 2020. He says the city is still getting one or two requests per day for recycling carts.
