Northern Indiana jury convicts man in toddler's killing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana jury has convicted a 19-year-old man in the fatal shooting of a South Bend boy struck by a bullet fired from several blocks away.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1892Tr8 ) the St. Joseph County jury convicted Robert L. Griffin of murder Friday in John Swoveland Jr.'s April 2014 death.

Prosecutors say the 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a stray bullet that Griffin had fired from a revolver toward another man during a fight in a nearby park.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Fronk told jurors the bullet that killed Swoveland traveled several blocks before striking the toddler.

The jury also convicted Griffin of attempted murder for firing at that other man, Larry Bobbitt, with the intent to kill him.
