5-year-old girl killed, teen cited in Rt. 72 crash near Gilberts

Kane County authorities are investigating a multivehicle crash that killed a 5-year-old girl Friday afternoon in Rutland Township.

The girl, the daughter of the driver of a car that was struck head-on by a vehicle that had veered into oncoming traffic, was pronounced dead at Sherman Hospital.

She has been identified as Gabrielle Horvath of Hampshire.

The driver of the vehicle that lost control, a 17-year-old juvenile from Carpentersville, has been issued a citation for driving in the wrong lane.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Route 72 near the intersection of Big Timber Road.

The initial investigation revealed that the Mercedes C320 driven by the 17-year-old was traveling east on Route 72, approximately one-third of a mile east of Big Timber Road. Deputies said that as the vehicle approached a curve in the road, the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the westbound lane of traffic, striking head-on a Toyota FJ Cruiser that was traveling westbound on Route 72.

A third vehicle, a Chevy Chrome, was traveling behind the Toyota and struck the rear of the vehicle.

The driver of the Toyota, James Horvath, 45, of Hampshire, and his daughter, who was the passenger in the car, were taken to Sherman Hospital. The driver is still being treated for his injuries, but the girl, who was in a car seat at the time of the crash, did not survive.

The driver of the Mercedes was also taken to Sherman and is being treated for his injuries.

The driver of the Chevy Chrome, David Doyle, 39, of Byron, was treated and released at the scene.

Members of the Kane County sheriff's office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate.
