Carbondale man gets 25 years in shooting on school's campus

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - A 19-year-old Carbondale man will spend 25 years in prison for a shooting that seriously injured one person outside a high school.

Omari Tinsley was sentenced Wednesday in the Jan. 27, 2014, shooting at Rebound High School in Carbondale. He was convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm. He also was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Tinsley shot a fellow student's father in the stomach following an altercation with the man's son in the school parking lot. The Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/1AJf1vb ) reports Jerome Merriweather suffered injuries in the shooting that will require long-term care.

The Carbondale Police Department handled the investigation.
