5-year-old girl dies after being shot in face in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A 5-year-old girl died in Fort Wayne after being shot in the face.

Police spokesman Officer Jeremy Webb said Saturday that the initial investigation indicates the girl was killed when a gun fired accidentally. Webb says police have heard varying descriptions from witnesses about what exactly happened, including that the gun fired when the girl grabbed it in her father's hand and that it fired when the father tried to take the weapon from the girl.

The girl was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released.

The shooting occurred about 10 p.m. Friday. Police say the investigation is continuing.
