Champaign veteran to be honored by France

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Charles Bruns served in Africa, Italy and France during World War II. The 96-year-old Champaign man was wounded along the way.

Now the government of France wants the 96-year-old Army veteran to know it hasn't forgotten.

According to The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/1CdLeWi ), French Consul General Vincent Floreani will present Bruns with the Legion of Honor in Champaign on Feb. 27. The award is France's highest honor.

Bruns says he only knows the award is for heroism on French soil.

Bruns was part of the allied landings at Anzio, Italy, where he was wounded. And he was part of the invasion of France.

Bruns has a website, 70yearsago.com, which displays his detailed war diary and some of his war photos.
