Sheriff's detective wins 'Officer of the Year' award

Lake County Sheriff's Detective Wendell Russell was named "Law Enforcement Officer of the Year" by the Lake County Juvenile Officer's Association, officials announced in a news release.

Russell was nominated by his peers for his dedication and commitment to the fair treatment of juveniles within the juvenile justice system. He has consistently demonstrated his understanding of the seriousness of child abuse and child sexual abuse cases, officials said.

"Our office is committed to the protection and advocacy of children and congratulate Detective Russell, who worked hard to achieve the respect of his peers," Lake County Sheriff Curran said.

Each year, the Lake County Juvenile Officer's Association members nominate a "Law Enforcement Officer of the Year" whose achievement in protecting children is an example for the law enforcement community. The award was presented Jan. 30.

Russell began his career with the Lake County Sheriff's Office in 1988. In 2002, he became a detective in the Criminal Investigation Division and in 2012 was assigned to the Lake County Children's Advocacy Center.
