Aurora men charged in shooting, standoff

A pair of Aurora men are scheduled to appear in court Monday on charges stemming from a Friday shooting in neighboring Montgomery that left a man with wounds to both legs.

Kenneth F. Newsome, 19, of the 1100 block of Homer Avenue, faces 15 felony charges, including three counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, Montgomery police announced Sunday.

Edwardo Correa Hernandez, 20, also of the 1100 block of Homer Avenue, is charged with mob action and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

The charges stem from a shooting Friday afternoon at the intersection of Melrose and Elliott avenues, near Montgomery's border with Aurora. The shooting led to a standoff with police at an Aurora home that ended peacefully several hours later when the 19-year-old suspect surrendered to officers.

“The Montgomery Police Department investigators have been interviewing multiple witnesses and victims since Friday night,” Detective Sgt. Jeff Ricedorf said in a news release Sunday.

Newsome and Hernandez were transported to the Kane County jail on Sunday and will appear in bond court Monday morning, police said.
