Antioch prevails at Vernon Hills regional

At Vernon Hills: Antioch captured the Class 2A regional with 136 points, edging the host Cougars (135), while Carmel (130) and Grayslake North (129.5) finished third and fourth. Grayslake Central (123) was fifth.
Antioch boasted three champions in junior Nathan Dlugopolski (120), sophomore Patrick Schoenfelder (145) and sophomore George Bessette (195). The Sequoits also qualified for sectionals junior Jacob Gross (113, second), freshman Rolando Vazquez (126, second) and junior Stephen Frandsen (152, third).
Peter Vanderbloomer (138) accounted for Vernon Hills' lone champion. Other Cougars advancing are Dylan Geick (145, second), Andrew Smith (170, second), Connor Wood (182, second) and Joe Blitstein (285, second).
Carmel and Grayslake Central also produced three first-place finishers each. Carmel received championship performances from Michael Tortorice (113), Kenny Barber (132) and Nathan Morris (160). Grayslake Central got titles from Joseph Tarnowski (126), Jonathon Makey (152) and David Thiel (182).
The other champions were Lakes' Jared Smith (170) and Alex Girona (220), Grayslake North's Joe Arroyo (106) and St. Viator's James Valentino (285).
At Hampshire: Wauconda produced a pair of sectional qualifiers in sophomores Justin Mitchell, who took second at 106 pounds, and Tyler Stankiewicz, who placed third at 170.
