U of Illinois launching app for students walking home

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus will soon launch an app for students who would like an escort so they don't have to walk home alone.

Officials of the university's police department said Thursday the Student Patrol will make the app for its existing SafeWalks program available to students in the next few weeks.

The new app is being launched just after the killing of student Vicente Mundo. Police say he was shot to death Jan. 25. Two people have been arrested. A former student, Christian Zamora, has been missing since Dec. 31 after last being seen near campus.

The department says students can contact SafeWalks through the app. They'll get a quick confirmation call back and then an escort will be dispatched.
