Man charged in fiery crash that killed pregnant woman
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A 70-year-old man has been charged in a fiery Detroit-area freeway crash that killed a 23-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn son.
Police say Kayla White was driving on the Lodge Freeway in Southfield in November when her Jeep Liberty was rear-ended. The SUV was pushed into two other vehicles before rolling and catching fire. White, of Ferndale, died at the scene.
The Oakland County prosecutor's office says Clarence Heath is charged with one count of moving violation causing death, a misdemeanor that's punishable by up to a year in jail. The resident of the Detroit suburb of Beverly Hills made an initial court appearance Friday.
Defense lawyer Douglas Hampton says Heath is devastated over what he calls a "very unfortunate and tragic accident."
The next hearing is Feb. 18.
