Oh, no! Woodstock Willie sees his shadow

Awakened by a polka band, Woodstock Willie emerged from his tree trunk home this morning and ... we are in for six more weeks of winter.

The early-morning event drew a festive crowd of roughly 200 to the Woodstock Square the morning after a massive snowfall. Willie, local predictor of winter weather, saw his shadow, indicating the prolonged winter.

Woodstock's festival commemorates how the town — and most prominently the town square — served as the setting for the 1993 Bill Murray movie, “Groundhog Day.”

The ceremony on the town square was followed by the official Groundhog Day breakfast at the Woodstock Moose Lodge.

Breakfast was accompanied by more polka music and Premium Blend, a vocal group from Woodstock High School. Actor Richard Henzel was scheduled to re-create his role from the movie and Woodstock Willie was to be on hand for pictures.

Hundreds of people came to Woodstock Square to watch Woodstock Willie see his shadow, thus assuring, legend has it, six more weeks of winter. John Starks/jstarks@dailyherald.com
