Electrical fire damages church rafters in Libertyville

A small electrical fire Saturday morning damaged some wood rafters inside the chapel of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, fire officials say.

Firefighters responded to the call just before 11:30 a.m. in the 100 block of East Maple Avenue to find smoke in the chapel.

"The alarm went off and by the time we got there, there was quite a bit of smoke in the chapel area," Assistant Chief Brian Conner said.

An electrical problem that involved a light fixture is believed to have started the small fire, causing between $500 and $1,000 in damage, he said. There were people in the church at the time, but nobody was injured.

St. Joseph is expected to remain open for Sunday morning services. Mundelein and Countryside fire departments assisted.
