Waterloo Amtrak station receives funding for renovation

WATERLOO, Ind. (AP) - Amtrak train riders in northeastern Indiana will have more than metal and Plexiglas over their heads by the end of next year.

The town of Waterloo received more than $1.8 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the project in 2010. The money will be used to physically move the historic Waterloo Depot closer to the existing Amtrak boarding area. The site will be upgraded with restrooms and a new long-term parking lot.

WANE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1EsTKXp ) the project is part of a 10-year effort to replace the existing train shelter and return the depot to passenger use. It's now used as a community center.

Officials in the town 25 miles north of Fort Wayne hope the added amenities will draw more passengers to the station.
