SC allows Uber ride-sharing service to continue through June

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is allowing Uber to offer its ride-sharing service to continue at least until summer.

The Public Service Commission earlier this month issued a cease-and-desist order stopping the app-based service now offered in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Columbia and Greenville.

Media outlets report that the commission reversed course Thursday and granted the service a temporary license.

The California company can now offer the service through June 30. By then it's expected state lawmakers will have considered legislation on how the service should be regulated.

Uber allows users to request a ride through a smartphone app, which allows them to agree with a driver on a price, destination and pick-up time.

Gov. Nikki Haley and some lawmakers criticized the commission when it told Uber to stop operating earlier this month.
