Fort Wayne Children's Zoo to feature Tasmanian devils

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo has been selected to take part in a program aimed at saving Tasmanian devils from extinction.

Zoo Director Jim Anderson says the zoo was selected to take part in the Save The Tasmanian Devil Program administered by the Australian government. It is not yet known how many Tasmanian devils the zoo will receive or when they will arrive.

The devils' population on the island of Tasmania south of the Australian mainland has been decimated by a form of cancer.

The zoo first had Tasmanian devils in 1987 and the last devil in Fort Wayne died in 2004, the last of the Tasmanian devils known to be living outside Australia.

The animals will be exhibited in the Australian Adventure, which is undergoing a $7 million renovation.
