2 Indiana teachers receive national education award

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Two central Indiana teachers have been chosen to receive a national award that honors outstanding teachers.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz, announced Tuesday that Laurie Davies of Pine Tree Elementary School in Avon and Kelly Wilber of Southport Elementary in Indianapolis each will receive the Milken Educator Award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize.

Davies teaches fourth grade language arts, math, science and social studies and has focused on the use of data to improve her students' performance. Wilber teaches fifth grade and volunteers in a variety of school programs including the Science Night and summer school.

The Milken Family Foundation has devoted more than $137 million in funding to the Milken Educator Awards to attract, retain and motivate outstanding teachers.
