Lawrence Tech to use $5M bequest to fund scholarships

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A donation of more than $5 million will be used to provide scholarships to engineering students at a private university in Southfield.

George Mink, a former Lawrence Technological University student, and his wife gifted the money to the school through a trust when they died in 2013. Mink had several patents for material-handling equipment.

According to the university's interim vice president of advancement, the George and Dorothea G. Mink Endowed Scholarship in Engineering is one of the largest for students within the College of Engineering. The scholarships will mostly be awarded based on academic merit, though financial need and other factors will be considered.

The school plans to begin awarding the scholarships in fall 2016. They will be renewable as long as academic standards are maintained.
