Freezing rain this morning; flights to, from East Coast canceled

A powerful blizzard that's begun hitting a 250-mile swath of the East Coast will continue through today, forcing the cancellation of flights out of O'Hare and Midway airports. Many will not be rescheduled until Wednesday. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a freezing-rain advisory that expires at 6 a.m. The service is predicting ice accumulations of less than a tenth of an inch, but enough to possibly create slippery conditions this morning. Island Lake clerk loses battle with cancer

Island Lake officials last night were mourning the evening's death of Village Clerk Teresa Ponio. Mayor Charles Amrich said he spoke to Ponio's husband John before sharing the news of her passing with village officials around 7:30 p.m. "Teresa kept it private but she had been battling liver cancer for several months," Amrich said. "Today she succumbed to the illness." Full story.

COD to vote again on Breuder $762,000 severance package

College of DuPage trustees are expected to take another vote Wednesday on a controversial $762,000 buyout package for the school's president, Robert Breuder, and a government watchdog group is urging officials to reject the severance deal this time around. Gurnee OKs $5.8 million in tax breaks for AKHAN to move

Gurnee village board members last night approved a multimillion-dollar tax incentive package for a technology company to relocate in a business park near the Tri-State Tollway. Village board trustees Monday night voted 6-0 in favor of what will be a combined $5.8 million in performance-based state and local tax breaks for AKHAN Semiconductor Inc., which will move from Hoffman Estates and California. ISU student from Crystal Lake taken off life support

An Illinois State University student from Crystal Lake who had been critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Saturday was taken off life support last night, ABC 7 Chicago reported. Benjamin Allison, 20, was walking through an intersection near the ISU campus in Normal when he was struck. The Daily Vidette student newspaper reported that ISU student Joshua M. Dunn, 21, of Lombard has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in the crash. Full story.
