Alabama names Tosh Lupoi outside linebackers coach

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has hired Tosh Lupoi as outside linebackers coach.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban announced the hiring of the former California and Washington assistant on Monday. Lupoi served as an analyst for the Tide last season.

Saban says he's been impressed by Lupoi over the past year. He calls him "a high-energy guy" who brings new ideas both on the field and in recruiting.

Lupoi was the defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator at Washington in 2012 and 2013. The Huskies ranked fourth in the country in sacks per game in 2013.

He also spent four seasons as defensive line coach at California, where he became the program's youngest full-time coach as a 26-year-old in 2008.

Lupoi called the Alabama job "an incredible opportunity."
