Donations help southwestern Indiana food pantry stay open

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (AP) - A southwestern Indiana food pantry that scaled back its days of operation last fall amid monetary woes will remain open thanks to an outpouring of donations.

East Gibson Food Pantry director Dorothy Georges tells the Princeton Daily Clarion (http://bit.ly/1L59JMQ ) the food pantry received donations from several organizations and the community.

She says those donations should keep the food pantry in Oakland City, about 25 miles north of Evansville, open two days a week until this summer.

But the 21-year pantry volunteer urges those who can to continue donating to the pantry because "that's the only way we can stay open."

Georges says that around Christmas, some area families didn't exchange gifts, but rather brought in donations for the food pantry to help those less fortunate.
