Detroit Schools bringing more classes to district parents

DETROIT (AP) - Registration is open for Detroit Public Schools parents or guardians interested in improving the learning experience for their children.

Fifty free classes are being offered through the district's Parent University in February and March.

Parent University offers courses in academic success, life skills, parenting and professional development. It is part of the district's community engagement program.

Spelling bee-themed literacy classes to improve students' vocabulary, reading and writing have been added. So have science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities using the animated hit film "Frozen" as their theme.

All classes are taught by Detroit Public Schools educators. They are held in eight Parent Resource Centers and other select schools.

The new classes start Feb. 9.
