Why exclude women from priesthood?

I couldn't agree more with Kathleen Parker's editorial regarding Pope Francis in the Jan. 22 Daily Herald.

As a Catholic myself, I'm well aware of a dire shortage of priests, yet the church hierarchy's policy continues to be antiquated and myopic. The argument is that Jesus selected only men as his apostles. But Jesus was a man of his time, and 2,000 years ago women were not doctors, lawyers and political leaders. I think the early Christians would have found it difficult to heed the words of a female apostle.

Things are far different today. By excluding half the Catholic population from the priesthood, the church is shooting itself in the foot. Pope Francis is also a man of his time, and I hope that on this issue he will usher the Catholic Church fully into the 21st Century.
