Savannah St. women snap Hampton's 54-game MEAC streak

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Ezinne Kalu scored 23 and Savannah State beat Hampton 61-55 on Saturday, snapping the Lady Pirates' 54-game Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference win streak.

Hampton's last conference loss came nearly three years ago, when it lost 69-66 in overtime to Coppin State on Jan. 28, 2012. The streak included regular season and tournament games.

Ryan Jordan hit two free throws with 1:19 to play, capping a 14-6 run and pulling by Hampton (9-10, 5-1) within one, 56-55, but the Lady Pirates went 0 for 5 from the field with three turnovers from there.

Savannah State (9-9, 4-2), which improved to 1-4 all-time against Hampton, trailed 15-8 with 11:28 left in the first half before Kalu scored 13 during a 21-6 run over the next six-plus minutes to take the lead for good.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas led Hampton, which shot just 30 percent from the field and made 3 of 14 from 3-point range, with 18 points.
