Police say Baltimore officer shoots, kills man with knife

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police say an officer has shot and killed a man wielding a knife.

Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez says an officer was on patrol Saturday when he responded to people yelling for help outside a house in Southwest Baltimore. He says the officer was told a man inside was threatening people with a knife.

Rodriguez says that when the officer confronted the man, the man refused to drop the knife.

Rodriguez says the man was struck at least once. He later died at a hospital.

Rodriguez says the officer "definitely fired in immediate defense of his life."

It was the second officer-involved shooting within days. Police say a man was wounded Thursday after a "violent struggle" with an officer, who fired her weapon.

Police identified her Saturday night in a news release as Officer Angel Richardson, 32. She has been on the force since 2013 and is assigned to the department's neighborhood patrol bureau. The release said Richardson had not been involved in any previous officer-involved shootings.

Police said the man shot in that case was still being treated Saturday at a hospital.
