Wisconsin mine protester gets 9 months in jail

HURLEY, Wis. (AP) - A woman accused of disrupting mine workers in northern Wisconsin as she protested Gogebic Taconite's mining plans has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Daily Herald Media reports (http://wdhne.ws/1CDca5G ) 27-year-old Katie Kloth pleaded no contest to robbery and misdemeanor party to the crime of criminal damage to property in connection with the 2013 incident.

She faced combined maximum penalties of 15 years and nine months in prison and fines of $60,000.

Iron County Judge Douglas Fox ordered the jail time and five years of probation on Wednesday. Fox also ordered restitution of $2,400.

According to court records, Kloth was among about 20 protesters, many wearing bandanas covering their faces, who threw cans and water bottles at workers to intimidate them as they drilled exploratory holes.
