Minor injuries for 2 Cleveland police officers in shooting

CLEVELAND (AP) - Two Cleveland police officers received minor injuries after a burglary suspect struggled with the officers and fired a gun while being arrested, police said.

The incident began Wednesday evening when an 82-year-old man reported that he'd been shot at three times after confronting a man who had broken into his home, police said. The man was not injured and provided a description of the truck the suspect drove away in.

More than two hours later, two Cleveland officers spotted a truck matching the victim's description and pulled it over. The passenger drew a gun and aimed it at the officer who was attempting to frisk him, police said. In the ensuing struggle, the suspect fired a shot that narrowly missed the officer but caused powder burns to his face, according to police.

The other officer, a rookie, tackled the suspect, who was finally subdued after more officers arrived, police said. The officer in the initial scuffle was treated for burns and a bite to his finger. His partner was treated for an eye injury, cuts and bruises.

A second suspect who remained in the truck was arrested without incident.

Police did not release the name of the officers or the two suspects on Thursday.

The president of a Cleveland police union said some onlookers jeered at the officers during the incident but added that most were supportive.
