Winchester Road closed in Mundelein after crash involving sheriff's deputy

Winchester Road is closed from Route 45 and Midlothian Road in Mundelein due to a crash involving a Lake County Sheriff police vehicle, authorities said.

Mundelein Deputy Police Chief Don Hansen said a Lake County Sheriff's deputy was responding to a call at 7:23 a.m. when the accident happened.

Hansen said initial reports show the sheriff's deputy was in the median passing stopped cars when an oncoming vehicle pulled into the median. The two "clipped," Hansen said, and the sheriff's vehicle ended up in a nearby ditch

Everyone walked away from the crash, Hansen said. The sheriff's deputy was being taken to a hospital for "a checkup," Hansen said.

The accident remains under investigation, he said, and anticipates the road will reopen around 9 a.m.
