Indianapolis area firefighters save 3 dogs from icy ponds

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Emergency crews in the Indianapolis area are warning pet owners about the dangers of thinning ice after rescuing three dogs from partially frozen ponds.

The Wayne Township Fire Department saved a pit bull that was clinging onto the edge of an ice hole Tuesday afternoon. The responding firefighters used a rope to safely reach the area where the dog was trapped, pull her out of the water and bring her back on land.

A couple of hours later, a Rottweiler and a black Labrador retriever that escaped their fenced-in backyard and chased birds onto a pond were rescued by the Indianapolis Fire Department. Crews were able to reach the dogs using a flotation device and pull them to safety within about 10 minutes.

All three dogs were dried off and returned to their owners.
