Police: 2 dead following attempted robbery at Joliet store
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Police say a clerk and a robbery suspect are dead following a shootout inside of a Joliet convenience store.
Joliet police say two masked men entered Gardner Food Mart on Monday afternoon. Deputy Chief Al Roechner says one of the men displayed a handgun and told the clerk they were robbing the store.
Police say shots were fired when the 24-year-old clerk grabbed his own handgun. Mohammad Y. Eid, whose father owns the store, was shot and later died at a local hospital.
Roechner says the suspects fled the scene. He says the 24-year-old gunman was later dropped off at a hospital, where he died.
Roechner says two other people were in the store during the shooting, but they weren't injured.
Police are still searching for the second suspect.
