Celebrations to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) - Churches, community groups and public officials plan volunteer events and services to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Illinois.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner plans to attend City Year Chicago's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday. The group says they will have hundreds of volunteers and partner with AmeriCorps to work in Chicago schools.

Rauner's office says the governor also will sign an executive order aimed at minorities and veterans.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's office says he will participate in a discussion about the civil rights leader with the mayor of Skokie on Monday evening.

Southern Illinois University plans a breakfast with the theme "Rejoice, Reclaim, Renew Community" and Mount Joy Missionary Baptist Church in Edwardsville plans to sing civil rights anthems at its celebration.
