ComEd issues warning about phone scams

CHICAGO (AP) - ComEd has issued a warning about scammers who are calling customers pretending to be ComEd employees.

The utility company says it's received an increasing number of reports about the calls. They say the callers falsely claim that a customer's electric service will be disconnected unless they make a payment.

The callers instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call a different number with the card's personal identification number, or PIN.

The scammers sometimes manipulate caller ID so it appears they are calling from a ComEd number.

The company says its representatives never will call customers and ask them to buy a prepaid credit card, or ask for cash.

They say anyone who thinks they may be the target of a scam should call the Illinois Attorney General's office.
