St. Charles library to offer free genealogy workshops

Did you know that genealogy is one of the fast growing hobbies in the United States? It combines detective work, reading, photography, technology, the science of DNA and in some cases traveling.

The St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., is offering three free genealogy workshops during the months of January and February for beginners or the advanced researcher.

• "Genealogy Basics for Beginners" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in the Carnegie Community Room. Genealogist Caron Brennan will introduce you to the tools needed to start finding your roots, and discuss the steps to gather family stories, finding and using key resources and organizing your research.

• "Ancestry.com - Beyond the Basics" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the Carnegie Community Room. Genealogist Steve Szabados will describe how to find and unlock the rarely used databases in Ancestry.com and review techniques to streamline your research.

• "Where Did I Put Great Grandpa?" is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Community Room. Genealogist Caron Brennan will discuss methods of effectively organizing family data so you can always "find Great Grandpa" or any other family member.

Registration for all workshops is required.
