Metro Louisville Council President Jim King dies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Metro Louisville Council President Jim King has died.

Mayor Greg Fischer said in a statement on Thursday that King died overnight. He ordered flags at all Metro buildings to be lowered to half-staff at 11 a.m. in King's honor followed by a moment of silence.

Councilwoman Marianne Butler told The Courier-Journal that the city had lost a "wonderful council member" who "had the city in his best interest."

Butler said King had been suffering from an illness lately and had missed some recent meetings, but seemed to be getting better.

Councilman Kelly Downard says King was admired and respected for the leadership he provided to the city.

He was first elected to the council in 2004. He became president in 2008 and was re-elected to the post just last week.
