Herzog paces Harper in loss to Wright

Harper women's basketball coach Jenny Turpel got an answer to a question she'd rather have avoided in Wednesday night's 60-54 loss to Wright College in the Hawks' North Central Community College Conference home opener:

Who would do the scoring if the team's top player, Joslyn Nicholson, couldn't compete?

Answer: Kim Herzog. The Buffalo Grove produced canned six 3-points and finished with a game-high 27 points. It wasn't quite enough, with Nicholson serving a one-game suspension, as Harper dropped to 6-12 overall and 0-3 in the N4C.

"I knew that I had to step up," said Herzog, a freshman.

NJCAA Division II leading scorer Tayja Dean, who was averaging 27.8 points coming into the game, led Wright with 25.

Herzog saved her best moments for the second half, during which she scored 21 points, including the final 5 points of the game.

Lane Winkler made three 3s and finished with 15 points for Harper, and Ashonte Sims had 12 points.

Wright improved to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the N4C.
