$28M affordable housing project in Detroit gets green light

DETROIT (AP) - A vacant hotel in Detroit will reopen next year as a residential building to provide affordable housing to area residents.

Mayor Mike Duggan, Midtown Detroit, Inc. and their partners announced Tuesday that funding has been secured for the $28 million project in the former Strathmore Hotel building. The historic eight-story building will be reconstructed into 129 apartments and 2,000 square feet of commercial space.

The project is expected to begin in about a month and should be complete next summer.

The hotel closed 11 years ago.
