Benton comes up big for Harper

The men's basketball coaching staff at Harper College may be seeing the start of something they'd been hoping for all season - the emergence of freshman forward Davion Benton.

The 6-foot-5 forward average 16.5 points and 13 rebounds in a pair of losses to ranked opponents and has earned NJCAA Region IV, Division III player of the week honors.

Against top-ranked Rock Valley, Benton scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds in an 81-69 loss, his top performance in those categories since getting 24 and 18 against Olive-Harvey on Nov. 1.

Benton's 9.8 rebounds per game rank him 23rd nationally, and he trails only Joliet Junior College's Matt Hund for the North Central Community College Conference lead.

Harper host Wright College in N4C play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
