Trial set to begin in fatal Lombard arson case

A trial is set to begin this morning in the case of a Villa Park man accused of setting a fire in Lombard that killed his ex-girlfriend and severely injured another man. Todd Mandoline, 25, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated arson, arson and criminal damage to property in the July 22, 2012, fire that caused the death of Paula Morgan and seriously burned Jason Cassidy of Villa Park. Benedictine president to retire

Benedictine University President William J. Carroll announced yesterday that he plans to retire at the end of the year. Carroll has led the Lisle university for more than two decades, ushering in a vast array of physical and social improvements. University officials will conduct a national search for his replacement. Firefighters save family's cat in Bartlett

Bartlett firefighters rescued a family's cat yesterday afternoon from a fire that left the family homeless, fire officials said. The fire broke out just before 12:30 p.m. on the 200 block of Buckingham Drive. It caused an estimated $350,000 in damage. Full story.

Rauner takes office, orders agencies to freeze nonessential spending

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner took the oath of office yesterday and then quickly ordered agencies to freeze all nonessential spending. The wealthy businessman told people in Springfield that the state has become less competitive and that business residents have fled the state because of high taxes and overregulation. Full story.

Three Barrington High classrooms transformed

Some Barrington High School students returned from winter break to find that their traditional classrooms had been transformed into a new modern space with new designs, colors and furnishing. Three rooms received makeovers and were met with favorable reviews from students, school officials said. Full story.

Bulls lose

Derrick Rose returned to the lineup after missing one game due to soreness in his left knee and played reasonably well, but the Orlando Magic got the 121-114 victory over the Bulls at the United Center last night. Rose had 18 points and 7 assists while hitting 8 of 15 shots from the field. Full story.
