Waubonsie Valley ensemble joins Naperville Municipal Band concert

If the wintry weather has you longing to escape to somewhere much closer to the equator, the Naperville Municipal Band is eager to provide the soundtrack for your daydreams.

The band's winter concert, "From Tropic to Tropic," features an array of pieces from warmer climes, Director Ron Keller said.

"This concert is our answer to the Polar Vortex," Keller said. "We hope to warm up the audience with a selection of music that will take them from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer."

The concert begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the auditorium at Waubonsie Valley High School, 2590 Ogden Ave., Aurora. Admission is free.

As part of the show, the Wind Ensemble from Waubonsie Valley will perform under the direction of Mark Duker, the school's fine arts department chairman. Waubonsie Valley is recognized as a Grammy Signature School.

The Waubonsie Valley Wind Ensemble will play "Fanfare for a New Era" by Jack Stamp; "Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa, Movement II. After 'The Thunderer,'" by Ira Hearshen and "The Thunderer" by Sousa. The ensemble will join the municipal band on the "American Overture for Band" and the "Zacatecas March."

The municipal band's musical selections include "The World's Waiting for the Sunrise," featuring the euphonium section; the "Italian in Algiers" Overture by Rossini; "In a Persian Market;" "Brazilian Festival;" "Argentina;" and "From Tropic to Tropic." Vocalist Cathy Lord will sing "As Time Goes By" from "Casablanca."
