Schumer: Jets should keep training camp at SUNY Cortland

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer wants the New York Jets to keep their training camp in central New York.

The New York Democrat will be at Syracuse University Monday afternoon to call on the NFL team to return this summer to SUNY Cortland, 30 miles south of Syracuse.

Schumer says since the Jets began holding their training camp in Cortland starting in 2009, some $24 million has been pumped into the local economy thanks to the thousands of fans who show up each summer during the team's three-week stay.

Late last month, the Jets fired head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik. Ryan was a big proponent of the team's holding training camp in Cortland.

A source told The Associated Press over the weekend that Ryan had reached a deal to coach the Buffalo Bills.
